[Earthquake Observation] Central Weather Bureau Wishes to Speed Up the Provisioning of Deep Earthquake Observatories Network (Chinese Version)

CNA News (2010/03/14) While the occurrence of earthquakes becomes more frequent, Central Weather Bureau keeps on the provisioning of the earthquake observation network. In order to get more accurate data, Central Weather Bureau spent a lot of effort on constructing deep-well observatories, but because each deep-well observatory requires the budget about ten million NT, only nine deep-well observatories have been completed during the past two years.

Central Weather Bureau points out, the ground observatories cannot offer accurate data for the signal interference; besides, most earthquakes are sourced in the depth. Hence, the observatories in the depth will be a better choice. Since 2007 when the first deep-well observatory was constructed in Hualien, there have been nine deep-well observatories built in Hulien, Yilan and Taipei. With Central Weather Bureau's plan, at least seventy deep-well observatories are required for the provisioning of the broadband earthquake networks. However, the restricted budget is detaining the construction, and it seems another dozen of years is required to complete the goal. Central Weather Bureau thus plans to fight for budget and to begin the cooperation with the universities on the provisioning.
